The library will be collecting your Summer Reading Records from August 24-September 4. This year your donations will be given to the Walker Repurposing Committee for “seed money” to start a Community Garden behind the Walker School building. You don’t have to fill the entire record to earn a donation, but if you do, you will receive a gift card for an ice cream sandwich or mini cone at John’s Ice Cream. All ages can participate. Print a Summer Reading Record.

Remote Patient Monitoring

Thursday, September 24·6:30 – 7:30pm

Reid Plimpton, the Program Manager at Northeast Telehealth Resource Center, will be displaying and demonstrating a “petting zoo” of digital tools that help you manage your health. These may be blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) that track blood sugar for diabetes management, and wearables & cardiac monitors, smartwatches and patches that continuously track heart rate, ECG rhythms, and daily activity. These real-time analytics can enhance hospital post-acute care and improve collaboration with your doctor. (I will post the specific devices that will be available once I receive more information from him.)

Free laptops and tablets are still available. See directions and application. Attendance at the Remote Patient Monitoring program will count as the Telehealth requirement. Ten people in the Waldo Broadband Corporation towns of Freedom, Liberty, Montville, Palermo, and Searsmont have completed the program and their feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

First Cuts: Relief Prints by Martha Piscuskas

During September and October, Martha Piscuskas will be exhibiting both linocuts and wood block prints. Starting in 2000, during her time co-founding, volunteering, and then directing Waterfall Arts, a community art center first in Montville and now in Belfast and Rockland, she learned various printmaking methods. Last year, she concentrated her creative time on making small and larger relief prints and considers herself an advanced beginner. She worked with Scott Minzy, and Lyell Castonguay of Big Ink, here in Maine and Merlyn Chesterman in the UK, a master printer on the Council of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

Martha has lived in Liberty within walking distance of the library since 1988 and currently works at the Maine Arts Commission. The library will host a reception for Martha on Thursday, September 17, from 5:00-7:00pm. Everyone is welcome.

Introduction to AI

.Love it or hate it! – Artificial Intelligence is now mainstream so it is important to learn more about it.

Robert Swindler will be presenting an Introduction to AI: Getting Started with Gemini and ChatGPT. If you are curious about Artificial Intelligence but not sure where to start, this introductory workshop breaks down the basics of Large Language Models (LLMs) using two of the most popular tools available today: Gemini and ChatGPT. Perfect for beginners looking to understand what AI can do for them in a straightforward, no-nonsense environment or to simply understand what it means at a high level. He will include explanations, introduce and demonstrate tools, best practices and safety, and allow plenty of time for questions.

AI is a mandate for Robert’s job. “It’s a requirement for me to be working with it weekly, but otherwise I’m simply a cyber security person. So my expertise overlaps with researching using AI and building automations using AI.”

Robert lives in Liberty. Everyone is welcome to come learn more about AI and its uses.

Remove Invasive Plants Locally (RIPL)

As Julie promised in her introductory talk, she will be available on the above dates for a series of learn-the-plants drop-in sessions at the library. Bring in plants to identify and she will help you make a plan to eradicate them, if desired. You do not need to have attended her introductory talk in order to participate in these drop-in sessions.
